NASHVILLE, TN – Bandit Lites prides itself on offering people a career, one that reaches the upper echelon of the entertainment industry for decades. Bandit Lites honored lighting designer Chaz Martin for marking more than 40 years with the company and recognized Don Lockridge, Rick Munroe and Rick Herndon as they retired from the renowned lighting company, marking the end of an era. They have been integral in shaping the company’s success as their decades of experience helped innovate lighting designs, train the next generation of technicians and foster a legacy of creativity, precision and excellence.
Chaz Martin joined Bandit Lites in 1984 when he came to the United States with R.E.M. as their lighting designer. His storied career includes working with Jimmy Buffett, System of a Down, Beck, The Cowboy Junkies, Faith No More, OMD, Dan Fogelberg, Jewel, Tears for Fears and Hugh Laurie.
“Chaz and I became the best of friends in 1984 and have remained that way ever since,” said Bandit Lites Chair Michael T. Strickland. “He lived in Knoxville for many years, and we ran around together all the time. There is no one more talented than Chaz. Chaz, along with Michael Stipe, created the world-famous R.E.M. dark look; he magically made light and dark complement one another and the famous R.E.M. look was born. Jewel broke onto the scene and would not tour without Chaz. Every artist he has ever toured with fell in love with him as a person and as a lighting director. His dry English humor coupled with his personality make Chaz one of a kind. He and Jimmy Buffett hit it off from day one and that was a real odd couple! He worked with Jimmy to the end. I love Chaz and hope we work together until the end. Thank you for 40 great years Chaz, I love you sir.”
Don Lockridge’s retirement from Bandit is bittersweet as he initially came to Bandit in 1987 as “the new guy.” 37 years later, Strickland still reverently referred to Lockridge with that title. He was an integral member of Garth Brook’s touring team, providing constant support to the legendary lighting rigs. He also worked with Ronnie Milsap, The Judds, Alan Jackson, Brooks & Dunn, REM, Jason Aldean, Toby Keith, Sepultura, Widespread Panic and countless other tours and special events.
“It has been my pleasure to work with some of the most talented designers and crews in the world,” said Lockridge.
“I met Don standing in the warehouse of a bankrupt firm we were buying,” shared Strickland. “His first question was, ‘Do I still have a job?’ That was a fortunate moment for both of us. He came on as the new guy and I never let that go. I consider Don a great friend and always will. Don gave Bandit 37 amazing years, first as a lighting tech and then as a Project Manager. Don was a key part of the original Garth crew and developed a relationship with Garth that exists to this day. When Don moved into the office, Garth was of course a project he managed with love and care. Don in fact cared too much on all of his jobs that he would worry himself sick if every detail was not 100% correct!”
“We will miss Don and his grace and dignity,” finished Strickland. “He was always a gentleman and kind to everyone he met. There is a bronze plaque placed on the wall in his office now commemorating his 37 years. God bless you Don, and don’t be a stranger!”
When Rick Munroe came through Johnson City in 1974 as KISS’s Lighting Director, he met Strickland and the two kept in touch over the years. Rick stayed with KISS until the original break up, and he eventually found his way back to East Tennessee and joined Bandit full time. He spent decades working with Jimmy Buffett as well as touring with Lord of the Dance.
“When I first started working, I saw how all the different aspects of our business are put together: electronics, building, packaging, travel, marketing and computer technology,” said Munroe of his time at Bandit. “I was very impressed as I heard people from each department discuss procedures, needs, pros and cons of applications, and how they intended to fix whatever might go wrong. I have had the pleasure of working with people who enjoy what they do and do it very well.”
“Rick had the good fortune of a great personality and looking like George Clooney,” Strickland said with a laugh. “Those both worked for him. Rick never once told anyone he was the original LD for KISS. He was too humble. He spent time with Sunshine Promotions and got to know a lot of people. Everyone loves Rick. He is so easy going and mellow. Never an ill word for anyone. He spent years on Lord of the Dance and eventually settled on Jimmy Buffett. After 27 fun years Rick decided it was time to retire… while still coming in a few days a week. Like most of us, he can’t give it up. Rick too is a great friend, and I hope he comes in as long as he can.”
Rick Herndon also announced his retirement following 17 years with Bandit. Herndon’s dedication to motor maintenance made for a streamlined process that Bandit upholds to this day. His skill and aptitude were known throughout the entire company, ensuring that every motor that came through the shop was in working order.
“Before Rick joined Bandit we lived in fear of the word chain hoist,” said Strickland. “After Rick, chain hoists were never an issue. He was one of those people that you simply never heard from or about. He is truly a craftsman of the highest degree, and he worked quietly plying his trade.”
“Rick is at the age now that he wants to spend maximum time with his family, and I applaud and support him in every way,” Strickland finished.” He had two careers, and Bandit was lucky enough to have him for 17 wonderful years. Godspeed and good luck Rick my friend. We wish you only the best.”
In an industry that can be riddled with short term commitments and inconsistencies, Bandit views these storied careers as a true testament to the fact investing in people and offering long term opportunities brings about success. These four gentlemen all have accomplished incredible feats in their professional lives and as bittersweet as it is to see three retire, their impact on the lighting industry will be felt for many years to come. They join several other retired Bandits, a fact the company is very proud of. All have a 401K to carry them forward and homes that are paid for. The Bandit career path truly does work!
